What’s the difference between a campervan and a motorhome?

TT Campervan HireUncategorized

A campervan is generally smaller than a motorhome. This makes campervans easier to drive and get to more places especially for wild camping. Alternatively a motorhome because of its size is a bit more luxurious and will have more on board facilities. Having said that new campervan conversions are often equal now regards facilities.

Deciding which option is best for you is probably made easier by looking at the differences of each.

What is a campervan

Campervans are smaller than motorhomes (also known as Class B motorhomes). Typically, there is no distinction between the driver and the living area, and amenities can be restricted.

Campervans are ideal for couples or families that don’t mind a reduced living space. If you need more space, several versions include pop-out toppers that may be used as an extra sleeping area.

Our VW Camper van hire includes a pop up roof that gives additional height for people standing as well.

While their small size might be an inconvenience, it also makes them easy to drive and park. We believe this is an important consideration especially to people without previous experience of driving vans.

What is a motorhome?

The majority of motorhomes are built on truck, coach, or bus chassis and range in length up to 13-14 meters. While their size provides comfort, they can be difficult to drive, particularly along tiny rural lanes or in densely populated places.

With a motorhome generally there is a barrier that divides the driver from the living area but not always.

Larger types are sometimes referred to as ‘class A’ RVs. Classic examples of these are the USA style RV’s. The smaller types are commonly referred to as class C motorhomes.

Motorhomes are great for long-distance travel, both domestically and internationally, and can often seat at least four people comfortably for travelling. They are also often well-equipped, with full-size refrigerators and lots of space for cooking, sleeping, and washing.

What is the cost of a Campervan?

The price of a campervan varies greatly depending on what you are looking for.

Many brand new conversions cost over £40,000 for example. However there are many second hand campervans around of which many are old. These can cost from a few thousand up to £20,000 for more recent versions.

We have a brand new campervan conversion used for our VW camper van hire. It is a VW transporter VW T6-1 campervan which was carried out by market experts Van Lord.
It has the newest technology built in to this vehicle and even has solar panels for travellers wanting to go off grid.

What is the cost of a Motorhome?

The price of motorhomes varies greatly based on the type, size, mileage, and amenities included. However, in general, a brand new 4-berth camper may cost up to £50,000.

You can save by purchasing a used motorhome. There are many available with the older styles being a lot cheaper. The cost of these can start from around £10,000 but can cost from £30,000 upwards for newer ones.

Hire a camper van or motorhome

Why not try a camper van hire or motorhome hire first to see which option you prefer.
In my opinion a camper van hire is a lot easier to start with.

Nowadays the more modern camper vans are loaded with most if not all the facilities a motorhome has. So go give it a go. There’s many camper van hire companies around so I would start with that.
